English Words We’ve Been Pronouncing Wrong All Our Lives!!!

-Published on 19th March 2022 by Oxford School of English-

Here are 10 everyday words we use so much but pronounce so incorrectly. We wish someone taught us their correct pronunciation sooner! Let’s have a look!

1. HEART Well, you have a big HAAT and not HURT. So the ‘r’ is silent in heart and the sound is AA. Try it out with your mouth wide open.

2. DENGUE In Hindi this word is pronounced as डेंगू (den-GOO) but in English the right pronunciation is den-GEE. Don’t hesitate saying den-GEE the next time!

3. WEDNESDAY This word is not as long to pronounce as it is written. This one is simply WENZ-day. Not WED-NES-day! So yes, the ‘d’ in Wednesday is never pronounced.

4. RECEIPT The ‘p’ in receipt is silent, which makes it ruh-SEET (not ruh-SIPT).

5. VEGETABLE VEJ-tuh-buhls make you healthy, and not VEH-JEE-TABLES. The second ‘e’ is not pronounced in this word.

6. DATA DAY-ta privacy is a really important issue nowadays. Say, Ta-Ta to DAA-TA! :D

7. COUGH The next time you cough, make sure you say KOFF, not KUFF.

8. PLUMBER Here’s another silent letter word, where the b is silent. So it is PLUH-mur, not plum-BER.

9. VIDEO VEE-dio or VI-dio? The latter one is right in this case.

10. WOMEN English is a funny language, isn’t it? Why should there be an ‘o’ in women when it is never pronounced like an O! Well, it is what it is. The correct pronunciation is WI-min, not WO-min.
